Properties
(No User Tips)
Runner beans climb particularly high. In comparison to bush beans they are more demanding but provide a high yield in a smaller area.
Habitat
(No User Tips)
They need a warm & sunny protected location with loose well drained good garden soil.
Propagation
(No User Tips)
To obtain some seeds, from the first beans that grow, you should allow a few to ripen.
Bad Successors
(No User Tips)
The following plants should not be planted in the following years:

Cultivation
(No User Tips)
Beans are very sensitive to cold and in central Europe they should not be planted out in the open before 15 May.
For an earlier harvest they have to be started indoors. Put four to six bean seeds in a pot and bring to germination at 20°C.
- One day before sowing, put the seeds in lukewarm water, then they will germinate better.
- They need a support to climb up, so construct wigwams or place two metre long sticks before the seeds are placed:
Around each stick place five to six bean seeds. - Water sparingly until they germinate
- As soon as the plants reach a height of about 15 cm, earth up the soil.
- Water well between flowering and the fruit setting.
- Only fertilise with compost and organic fertiliser which contains little nitrogen (e.g. wood ash)
Deseases / pests
(No User Tips)
Diseases: Phaseolus virus, halo blight
Preventative measures:
- Grow varieties which are resistant to the phaseolus virus
- Planting of bed borders with low Tagetes repels aphids
Pests: Bean seed fly, black bean aphid (aphids normally only in masses in very warm, dry summers)
Harvest
(No User Tips)
The beans are ready to harvest as soon as the pods snap when they are bent and the seeds can't yet be seen through the pods.
The best time to harvest is a sunny morning.
Storage
(No User Tips)
Wrapped in a moist cloth, runner beans will keep in your fridge's vegetable cooler for at least two days.
Preparation
(No User Tips)
Runner beans are only eaten cooked.
Raw beans contain a poisonous protein called lectin, which only decomposes on heating.
