Undemanding, very low susceptibility to disease.
As a biennial plant, in its first year kale only produces leaves, in its second year it grows lots of yellow flowers. There are winter-hardy varieties which can be harvested over a longer period.

Sunny, medium heavy loamy soil with plenty of nutrients.

Propagate by sowing seeds.

Plants that are well suited for next year cultivation:

Carrots, Celery, Cucumbers, Endives, Fennel, Leeks, Onions, Peas, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Salad, Spinach, Strawberries, Sweet corn

The following plants should not be planted in the following years:

How many years: Not to plant:
3 year(s) Kale

Winter-hardy down to -20°C, especially the short varieties. Cover with a winter fleece or brushwood to keep cold winds off and prevent the leaves from turning brown.

Fertilise and water regularly. It's a good idea to grow them in batches at intervals of time. For overwintering, choose the plants which are planted late.

Pests: Flea beetles, cabbage white butterfly, greenhouse whitefly
Preventative measures:

  • Water regularly. Regularly hoeing or weeding reduces or prevents infestation by flea beetles.
  • Suitable for companion planting with onions and garlic.
  • Spray with an onion and/or garlic solution early in the spring.
  • Cover the planting bed with netting.

Control:
  • You should regularly collect the cabbage white butterfly grubs, as they will otherwise eat all of the leaves down to their ribs.
  • Water with a stinging nettle solution
  • Soapy solution
  • Spraying a film of rapeseed oil will suffocate larvae and aphids.

Harvest about three to five months after sowing. Harvest the leaves from the outside inwards, taking the heart last. Plucking leaves several times will increase the yield.
The leaves from the centre produce the finest aroma. A longer frost improves the flavour and increases the sugar level. Over ripe plants develop a bitter taste.

Do not keep kale for more than 4 to 5 days in your fridge's vegetable cooler, otherwise it will quickly lose its vitamin C.

Briefly pour boiling salt water over kale and then briefly steam with a little water.
It is particularly delicious au gratin with mushrooms and cheese or with Bregenwurst (a German speciality sausage) .
Tip:
Kale tastes really good when warmed up.
